We are thrilled to welcome to our MA DTCE team, Dr Amanda (Mandi) Banks Gatenby, Lecturer in Digital Technologies, Communication and Education.
Mandi began working at UoM as a Learning Technologist in the School of Computer Science, following a range of roles in ICT in Education including secondary (high school) teaching and educational software development and project management. She made the switch to MIE to do a PhD, just completed in 2017, exploring how pupils develop a critical understanding of computing through using the Raspberry Pi in school settings.
In other roles during her time at the university, Mandi has been on the Department for Education’s National Expert Group for Computing Curriculum, a teacher trainer on a Secondary Computing PGCE, and North West regional coordinator for the National Subject Association for computing teachers. She remains connected to school settings through voluntary work as a school governor and director of a not-for-profit preschool.
Mandi’s research interests are in how computational learning can bridge abstract and concrete notions of knowledge through digital making practices, social and computational theories of mind and learning and critical understanding of computation for digital ethics.
